M.S. in Transportation

Transportation professionals function in very complex environments characterized by ever-going changes in technological, regulatory, and legal frameworks. Transportation engineers plan, design, construct, operate, and improve transportation systems and infrastructure, focusing on elevating safety, mobility, and level of service associated with all modes of transportation.

The MS in Transportation program prepares students to be transportation planners, engineers, and managers who can plan, design, operate, and manage transportation systems capable of satisfying society's transportation needs.

Applicants should have a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution with some undergraduate background in economics, mathematics, probability and statistics, and computers.  Students who lack an appropriate background may be admitted and required to make up deficiencies by taking a program of courses designed in consultation with graduate advisors. These courses are taken in addition to the degree requirements. These courses are taken in addition to regular degree requirements; descriptions may be found in the undergraduate catalog.

What do transportation engineers do?

Transportation engineers enable the movement of people and goods within our communities and throughout our world. They work closely with contractors, utility companies, and government agencies. They also work with local and regional planning boards to identify areas of growth and development, while looking for opportunities to alleviate traffic congestion. Once they understand the needs of drivers in a region, they design, develop, and estimate the cost of construction projects. Once a new plan has been funded, transportation engineers oversee a variety of subcontractors who build new roads, highways, and bridges. Once a project has been completed, transportation engineers assure citizens that roads are properly maintained and repaired. Throughout the process of serving the public, transportation engineers must comply with a myriad of local and federal policies for the safe construction and maintenance of transportation infrastructure.
